Youtube Music

The goal was to break down the usability heuristics of interface design while keeping the Laws of UX in mind.

Youtube Music- The app

This page offers users a variety of options to explore, allowing them to select music based on their mood at the top and recommending songs using a personalized listening algorithm.

The implementation and violation shows where the laws of UX has been applied and where it could be improved.

In YouTube Music, the Law of Proximity is used in many ways.

When you play a song:

  • The song title and the artist's name are placed close together, so you instantly know they are related.

  • The play, pause, next, and shuffle buttons are grouped together at the bottom, making it clear they are all controls for the music player.

This grouping helps users easily understand which elements are connected and interact with them without confusion.

The Law of Pragnanz
"People perceive complex images or designs in their simplest possible form.

Our brain likes to organize and interpret things in the easiest and most straightforward way. When faced with complex visuals, we simplify them to understand them quickly.

Here it is applied but it lacks simplicity in terms of cognitive load.

Juxtaposition:
Placing elements side by side to show a relationship or comparison between them.

Songs listed with podcasts without any title is misleading.

User Control and Freedom is basically letting users explore freely, but always giving them a way to go back or fix mistakes.

Youtube music gives navigation freedom to users.

Recognition rather than recall: Letting users see options instead of making them remember things from scratch.

Consistency and standards: Keeping things predictable and familiar so users know what to expect.

Error prevention: Designing your interface in a way that stops users from making errors rather than just helping them recover from them.

Visibility of System Status: Making it clear to users what's happening in the app at all times, so they don’t feel lost.

Help and documentation: Providing guidance and support for users in case they get stuck, but design the system to be intuitive enough that they rarely need it.

Aesthetic and Minimalist Design: Keeping the design clean and simple, focusing on what matters most while avoiding clutter.

Fitts' Law :The time it takes to reach a target is a function of the target's size and distance.

  • Larger targets and shorter distances are easier to reach, making interactions faster.

  • Smaller targets and longer distances take more time to reach.
